PREPRINTS OF BASIC SCIENCE RESEARCH

What They Are
"Preprints are well-developed manuscripts, freely accessible; mechanism for sharing ideas and an informal way of obtaining feedback; citeable; and have a doi."

What They Aren't
Peer-reviewed (but can be under review), version of record, editable, indexed in PubMed Central (limited to accepted, peer-reviewed author manuscript version)

Non peer-reviewed manuscripts (full articles, letters or short communications, and review papers) can be posted as a preprint that can be cited in peer-reviewed articles. The benefit is that researchers can more quickly disseminate their findings and receive feedback.

Why Use Them?
Establish priority
Allows for immediate dissemination and feedback
Might improve a piece of work or the reporting of a study
May aid in accommodating "open access" mandates
Might increase exposure and competition among journals to publish a piece of work
No financial cost associated with posting preprints

Challenges
The myth of being "scooped"
Concerns about patient privacy and safety
Some medical journals still consider preprints "prior publication"
Currently, no standard mechanism for competing interests or transparency guidelines specifically for preprints

PUBLICATIONS

Plain-language summaries are still optional; however, this is likely to change.

Some journals use social media, links to patient advocacy groups, and advertising on their website to promote plain-language summaries.

SCIENTIFIC CONGRESSES

Increasingly, patients are searching for and sharing the latest information from major medical conferences. Providing an abstract plain-language summary of scientific meetings can help patients find the info they need.

Protect the Reputation of
Your Company and Authors

We stay abreast of the latest Ethics and Compliance guidelines so that you don't have to.

In 2016, the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) stipulated that data generated in interventional clinical studies be responsibly shared with external investigators. Specifically, data sharing is to include making de-identified individual patient data used to support the article's results, to include tables, figures, appendices, and other supplementary materials, available no later than 6 months after publication.

Publication Planning

We can complete a gap analysis and use that to work with your team to develop and maintain an 18-month or longer publication plan that takes into account:
  • Major medical meetings and data availability

  • Advance priming of the market by publishing review articles on the disease state and emerging therapeutic treatment options
